The late nineteen century maps of Stonehouse show a settlement surrounded by orchards. Two are now left one in the Pearcroft Road area of the town the other remnant is this collection of old Perry Pear trees left on Oldends Farm, Oldends Lane. At this time of year these remaining trees burst forth into blossom and provide some idea of what it must have been like to walk around the edges of Stonehouse in the past. These trees may not be safe or be preserved for ever but at least they have escaped the chainsaw fate of there fellows. The remaining trees will hopefully provide residents with this glorious show for many more years to come. Who knows the current financial climate may persuade the land owner to plant more and create an even better show. Perhaps he/she may be persuaded to once again produce a local Perry for the residents of Stonehouse to enjoy.

Whilst the ponies create a picturesque scene they are far from ideal livestock to be placed into a living working orchard. Their tendency to chew the bark of the trees and to rub themselves against the trunks creates serious damage to the trees. Sheep or pigs would be the old time farmers choice of orchard livestock.
Orchards create a fantastic habitat for a vast array of creatures and for some the only one in which they can survive. Preservation of existing orchards is a vital part of any communities response to environmental degradation. The creation of new orchards should be looked upon as a vital tool in our response to climate change and global warming.
For those interested in Orchards The Gloucestershire Orchard Group provides information, help and guidance. They also maintain a "Mother Orchard" of Gloucester varieties.
